10 Things That You Might Not Know About Uxbridge

Our shop is in Uxbridge, everyone at Balcony Shirts lives in Uxbridge, we like to take the Mickey, but we like Uxbridge. Here are 10 things you may not know about the place…

Fact number 1.  The name is derived from ‘Wixan’s Bridge’. The Wixan were a 7th-century Saxon tribe, and the bridge was probably near the bottom of Oxford Road where the ‘Swan and Bottle’ public house now stands.

Fact number 2.   It’s the administrative centre for the London Borough of Hillingdon, with it’s headquarters in the Civic Centre. The Grand Union Canal passes immediately to the west of Uxbridge and forms the borough boundary.

Fact number 3.   It’s home to Brunel University, which was named after the Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Notable former students include former England footballer Tony Adams, Mighty Boosh actor Noel Fielding and Libertines/Dirty Pretty Things guitarist Carl Barat.

Fact number 4.   Strange but true – Uxbridge is often called ‘the Venice of West London’. It’s only got one canal so no, we don’t know why either!

Fact number 5.   Uxbridge has two shopping centres, The Mall and The Chimes. The Mall didn’t have a roof when it opened in 1975 – locals still talk of how cold it was. The Chimes stands on the site of the old Harmans brewery.

Fact number 6.   For about 200 years most of London’s flour was produced in the Uxbridge area. In the 19th century the Kingsmill opened – they’re now one of the best known bread makers in the country. There is also a ”Bakers Yard”.

Fact number 7.   RAF Uxbridge was the headquarters of 11 Group Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain. A replica Spitfire could be seen on display at the front entrance until March 2010.

Fact number 8.   It used to have three railway stations – Uxbridge Vine Street (originally just called Uxbridge Station), Uxbridge High Street, and Uxbridge Belmont Road. All these have now closed, replaced by the Underground and bus services.

Fact number 9.   The ‘Moderne’ or Art Deco style Uxbridge Lido opened on 31 August 1935. The building is now Grade II Listed, and has been incorporated into the new Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Complex which opened in 2010.

Fact number 10.   In the early 19th century the jurist William Arabin had a low opinion of Uxbridge residents, saying ‘They will steal the very teeth out of your mouth as you walk through the streets. I know it from experience.’ They’re a lot nicer nowadays, honest!
